All work is individually hand thrown porcelain with a crystalline glaze. The lids are each sculpted porcelain with a metallic glaze. DOUBLE CLICK IMAGE TO THE RIGHT to enlarge. My Artist Statement * Awards * Shows : In 1974, at the ripe age of 18, I discovered my life's work & passion...Clay. Since those first years, my work has gone through many evolutions of refinement & growth. Making a living as a potter has not been an easy journey. It has been one of triumph & tears, joy & hard work. It is a way of life I would never trade. My medium is high fire porcelain clay. Each piece is an original design and made one by one. Starting with a ball of clay, I throw a form on the potters' wheel. I later trim a "foot" and after thorough drying they are placed in a kiln to be fired, then once more after the glaze is applied. although they resemble bronze, each of my lids are individually sculpted porcelain with a bronze, metallic glaze. One of the glazes I use is called a "crystalline" glaze because of the crystals that form on the surface of the vessel in the firing. In simple terms, although it is far from simple, it is the combination of ingredients in the glaze, the heat of the kiln and a very slow cooling after reaching temperature which creates the beautiful patterns. With each firing, every pot is uniquely different, making each piece a true one-of-a-kind. There can be many unforeseen circumstances in the fire, but when everything falls into place, the surprise and elegance of a beautiful pot makes it all worthwhile. I feel our world has become over saturated with a mass of machine made production items. Fine crafted works are becoming a rarity as people have left behind the traditions of working with one's hands. It has taken many years to acquire my skills, a process of learning that is ever continuing. Inspiration : The first 41 images I took a couple of years in San Fransisco at the Science Museum and Japanese Tea Garden just nearby. A couple of the photos were in wine country and one from the hills near Sausalito looking over at the city. Fun time with my daughter Carly and son in law Alex. AND a BIG THANKS to Cindy for uploading the great frog and heron photos!!! Wonderful shots!
